Is it The Retirement Home for Your Aging Parents, Or Are They Home With You?

Most of us live our early lives not thinking about what might happen later on when our parents start aging. After all, it’s rarely talked about until we’re well into adulthood and even then it tends to be put on the back burner for fear that talking about it might be like inviting the time to come when we have to make new living arrangements and the like for our aging parents.

There are quite a few different options available for those of us who have the need to find a safe place for our aging parents to live, while allowing them to keep their livelihood. In reality, once parents are at the age where they have a hard time getting around their home and completing simple chores inside and outside of the house, it’s time to make different living arrangements for them.

The Options Are Out There

Many factors will come into play when deciding what arrangements will be the best for you, your family and your aging parents. Money is a big issue as many elderly and retirement homes can be pretty pricey. So, if you have the money and you don’t have the time to take care of your aging parents yourself, finding a reliable, safe and comfortable retirement home is probably a good choice for you.

If money is an issue for you, you always have the choice of bringing your aging parents home to live with you. Of course, you’ll have to determine whether you have the room or not, and whether you or a friend or family member has the time to help care for your parents.

Even then, some people find themselves in a bind as they don’t have the money for a retirement home, the room or time to bring their aging parents home with them, or the resources to get help elsewhere. It may not seem possible, but there are definitely some options you may have if your one who finds themselves in this position.

If you have children who use a room in your home or a home office, you might think about converting your garage or basement into either a room for your parents or a room for your office or child/children. Many times, kids are more than happy to have an opportunity to have a room that’s not conventional, so there’s no risk of having to feel guilty for kicking your kids out of the house.

As for find the time to care for your aging parents, there are a couple of options here. Paying for help to come to your home daily, to help with daytime meals and general living while the family is gone, is less expensive than a retirement home and you may find it’s something you can fit into your budget.

However, if this is out of the question you’ll want to sit down with your family and simply create a schedule. For example, 3 days a week you come home from work for lunch to help your aging parents with lunch and afternoon errands and the like. The other 2 days your spouse comes home to do the same.

Your kids or other family members can get involved by contributing to the schedule as much as possible, and as long as everyone pitches in, this option won’t turn your lives upside down or put strain on any of you. It would simply become a part of live you adjust to, and learn to love.

Yoga Can Help to Balance Your Work and Home Lives

With stressful working environments and hectic schedules, many people struggle with the negative impact of their busy work lives. Those who have difficulty managing their personal and work lives in balance with each other are increasingly turning to yoga exercises. Yoga helps them achieve peace of mind and helps them reach that ideal work-life balance.

The mind-body connection is piquing interest in this ancient practice, and research shows that it can indeed reduce blood pressure and stress, improve your work performance, and even make you age more slowly.

Even though the focus of yoga might vary depending on the environment, its central premise is to relax your body and keep your mind alert and focused. For instance, by practicing yoga, your focus in on the movements of your body, your breath, a certain sound, or possibly an object. If your thoughts turn to other things, as they probably will, just return your mind to your object of focus and continue on.

The ancient practice of yoga garnered renewed interest in the 1960s, when those interested in consciousness began to follow its practices. However, after this, yoga began to fall out of favor. This might be because yoga isn’t quite the same as many other kinds of exercise.

For example, you need patience in order to get its full benefits. It offers steady but slow results. This is in direct contrast to the almost frenetic activity and quick results of aerobics.

Lots of people hurry out to exercise energetically during their lunch break, and then dash back to their workplace. Of course, it’s probably physically beneficial, but it still adds pressure to an already overwhelmed life. In contrast, yoga offers a less stressful and competitive workout, and at the same time imparts a sense of just “being.”

One of the major reasons yoga is making a comeback is because it can be so healing as an activity. The over-the-top push for fitness generated by the traditional exercise regimes of aerobics, running, or weight lifting has led to a rash of injuries, including neck pain, back pain, or strained knees.

Today, even health practitioners are getting in on yoga practice, with chiropractors, neurologists and orthopedic surgeons sometimes referring patients to specific yogis during treatment.

In fact, it’s moving to the mainstream increasingly. Hospitals and businesses are now teaching yoga techniques, books about yoga are bestsellers, and discussion groups on the Internet have sprung up to talk about this “new” innovation.

Interestingly, even the U.S. Army has demonstrated its interest in yoga. It has requested that the National Academy of Sciences research New Age practices like meditation to discover if they can improve the performance of soldiers.

Also, yoga has become popular among those who weight train, run or do aerobics because of its stress reducing benefits.

Around 60 to 90 percent of visits to the doctor in the U.S. are related to stress. Cost effective and safe, a mind-body approach is an ideal treatment for this condition that doesn’t involve surgery or drugs. Among those who practice these techniques, 34 percent of infertile patients get pregnant within 6 months, and 70 percent of those who have sleep difficulties, including insomnia, get a good night’s sleep on a regular basis. As well, a decrease of 36 percent is seen in the number of people suffering from pain and making regular visits to the doctor.

You Don’t Need to Spend a Lot of Money on Yoga Equipment

A feature of yoga that many people find appealing is that it doesn’t require a whole lot of special equipment. In fact, you don’t need any equipment to perform most of the basic yoga exercises. So yoga can be practiced just about anywhere, very easily.

And it also allows individuals of every age to take part in yoga exercises. The benefits certainly outweigh the small amount of effort it takes.

It’s not only one of the most beneficial forms of exercise that you could undertake. It’s also one of the few that requires virtually no investment of money. The only thing you must have is some loose fitting clothes to make sure you’re comfortable during the various poses. Yoga is traditionally performed in bare feet. Therefore, there isn’t even a need for expensive athletic footwear.

As you become more advanced in your practice of yoga, you might feel the need to add some pieces of equipment to assist in taking yourself to higher levels. The simplest purchase is probably a yoga mat. This handy item will reduce the chance of slipping when doing your standing poses and will provide some cushioning for your seated poses.

Yoga straps are another useful item that can give a boost to your stretching abilities. These straps will help you become more flexible because they permit you to take on poses that you normally wouldn’t be able to do. But this doesn’t have to be much more than a belt or piece of rope that you probably already have. Even if you spring for the genuine yoga straps you won’t be paying out a lot of money.

Any of these basic items certainly won’t cost you a fortune. And equipment such as yoga mats, straps and bolsters will help to get your body in the correct position, providing alignment for your spine and legs. They’re certainly worth the price, however they’re not essential.

Really, the only other thing that’s necessary is a blanket. Most people have one of these.

There are people in many countries who practice yoga but don’t have the money to spend on fancy equipment. So there’s no reason to break the bank in order to get the benefits of yoga exercises.
